"Here is my take on the June Challenge. I love to doodle. I doodle and sketch designs when I'm in class to help me stay focused (otherwise my mind wanders all over the place). It is a coping skill that I developed a long time ago, but it wasn't until recently that I discovered why I doodle in class. But anyway- I don't have a very good relationship with sewing machines thanks to a run in with one in Home Economics in middle school so I like to faux stitch on my projects.

Here is an example of some of the stitches I use with my scrapping.

For this project I used Kathy's Frugal Friday tip about using scraps. Related to her tip, I order 6x6 paper packs in order to save money.Since I scrap mostly 8.5x11 the 6x6 paper works really well for what I need.

I was also inspired by a Page Maps sketch. For more details regarding my layout you can check out my blog.

Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge #1

Future Design Team Member Ren-Yi submitted this card for the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge. This is what she said, "Here is my take on the June Sketch Challenge:

This is a graduation card for a cousin that just finished high school. I wanted to send him off with a "good luck" sentiment as well as tell him how proud we all are. I have been inspired by the SOS group that I was determined to submit a June Sketch Challenge and try to get more practice with sketch challenges. I find it hard to keep true to the templates and always take creative liberties. Here are mine:
* I flipped the sketch vertically and horizontally to accommodate my stamp restrictions (digis would have more helpful in this case ;), since Olivia the Owl's branch looked better coming from the left.
* By keeping the branch on the left I could create visual arc lines with the branch and the top half of the circle, as inspired by the dotted arc lines in the sketch.
* The three scored lined was an interpretation of the five segments of the sketch. This allowed me to segment my paper and anchor my design more cleanly.
* The button with a bit of man-ly twine substituted for the flower.

I hope you can still see the elements of the sketch that deemed as the inspiration to this card, even given my many creative liberties. Any tips on keeping true to a sketch?

Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge

Totally Spoiled by Kathy

This is actually a combination of both the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge and the June Stitching Challenge.

I did this layout of my granddaughter at the pumpkin patch - not your regular autumn looking colors, due to Texas' weather. I used a piece of paper from the new DCWV Flower Shower Spring Stack. The strips are cut from one sheet of the 12 x 12 paper. I had to split them behind the pictures (Frugal Friday Tip), in order for the strip to fit diagonally on the page. I then cut the snail, and flowers out of one of the leftover strips. I then pen stitched around the top and bottom of the strips and pictures which gave the layout more pizazz!

This was a fun sketch to work with - I plan to use it again. I really like the circles in the sketch - but just couldn't make them work on this page - maybe next time.

Recoloring Letters to match your layout by Amy


Design Team Member Amy submited this Frugal Friday Tip.

I had previously purchased some American Crafts Thickers that were SUPER cheap. Looking more at the price than the product, i bought multiples of the same stickers. Come to realize later, nothing in my life matches hot pink polka dot Thickers. So, i threw them in the bottom of my stash.

For this layout i wanted some large, dimensional stickers for my title. Sadly, i could not find any to match my layout, so i decided to try painting my pink Thickers. And it worked! I thought the paint would chip off and it didn't! So, I painted my four letters with brown paint and sprayed them with glimmer mist to give them a more distressed look. In about 10 minutes i went from an "unusable" sticker to a usable one!

June Stitch and Sketch Challenge

Future Guest Design Team Member, Christy chose to combine the Sketch challenge with the June Stitch challenge.

Here is her description: "The sketch reminded me so much of sun beams. I had these photos of my son acting the part of a sundial during a homeschool science project and felt the sketch would be perfect for it. I wanted to create the illusion of sunlight becoming shadow. So I used water color crayons as a base on white cardstock. To help delineate the space, I stitched lines in light orange, dark orange and black DMC floss. I punched squares from my Basic Grey Ambrosia paper pad and layered these along the rows to add to the "sun to shadow" effect. The buttons and brads used are from Ambrosia as well. I used CK's Far out font to journal with and to cut the title on my cricut. When I took the original photos, I had to position myself to capture the shadows. There was a water meter in the shot. To hide it, I punched circles and wrote the time of day. I inked the journal spot and title with Colorbox black ink."

Design Team Member Laurie submitted her take on of the Scrap Our Stash Sketch. Here is her description: "This layout is of the food from my travels to Peru. We liked this place so much that we went there twice for the yummy brownie desserts.

I tried to incorporate many elements of the sketch with the striped and angled background, title placement, number of focal elements and circles made from ribbon. The ribbon was just something fun to do and I think it turned out pretty neat!

Scrap Our Stash Sketch

Design Team Member Stephanie submitted this layout for the Scrap Our Stash Sketch Challenge.

This is what she said: "It's all about graduation for me these days. I loved this sketch because I knew that it would be copper and green without looking tacky. (Sometimes copper and green (my school colors) look absolutely terrible together.) I started with an avalanche white piece of Bazzil cardstock and use distress ink (peeled paint) and Color Box copper inks to color the paper. The flower is made using felt, metal, and paper die cuts from the Sizzix Bigz die "Build A Flower". Oh, yeah, I deviated a little bit from the sketch and added a polka dotted layer. Why? Because if you look closely at the flowers I'm holding (top photo), you'll notice that they are wrapped with the same paper...literally, the same sheet of paper! Look for the green paper in one of my upcoming layouts! I love using little pieces of life in my layouts"!

Design Team Member Joni submitted this layout for the June Stitch Challenge. Here is her description:
"The foreground (yellowish paper where photos are matted): I misted some 8.5x11 embossed floral paper, decided where my photos were going to go and then hit the sewing machine. I stitched in yellow...all around the oustide of the embossed paper and in a pattern under where the horizontal photo was going. But it did not show up very well, so I went back over it in the maroon color...just went crazy and let the machine go and had fun playing.

Background: Then I decided I wanted to distress and "peek a boo" the background paper, so I calculated where the V-tears were going to go and stitched the background floral under the solid maroon, making V stitches where I planned (in pencil). Then I distressed & tore all around the outer stitching....

Design Team Member Kimmarie's Fugal Friday tip is an easy peasy one.

She said, "I am tired of misplacing my loose buttons. I know I must have plenty of storage spaces, I think too many is the problem. lol I like to see what I have instead of hiding things in drawers and containers. I am very bad at labeling my storage. Each month I throw away a few medicine bottles when I refill hubby's medicine. I thought to myself "what a waste!' I decided to alter these containers to store my buttons in. All I did was find some fun Sassafrass paperscraps to use, ink up the edges with my brown stazon ink and adhere it with glue dots. I also punched out some paper for the top of the containers and on one I added ribbon with glue dots. I want to make 6 total. His medicine comes in all different size bottles so it works out great for me! Do you have any household items that you alter for storage? How about a Frugal Friday Tip? Design Team Member Amy did this quick layout of her nephew, Gavin's 5th birthday party. Here is her description: "As you can tell it was "army" theme and i only had a scrap of army paper. I wanted to somehow incorporate all the colors on my layout. I decided to stitch green DMC floss around the circle to add some more green element. I love the look of stitching! Not only does it add texture and dimension, but it feels so "handmade" to me"!
